Serving Markets in Three Business Segments

Market-focused business segments with a cascading management structure

Our Family of Companies includes more than 250 companies in 57 countries around the world. These companies are organized into three business segments—Consumer, Medical Devices and Diagnostics, and Pharmaceutical. Each business segment is comprised of franchises and therapeutic categories.

While each operating company’s management is responsible for directing its business, a unique system of management alignment provides strategic coordination and guidance for the businesses in each segment.

Many of our employees find that the breadth of product categories and the collaboration that takes place across and between our companies creates outstanding opportunities to advance their careers across businesses or product platforms.

Consumer business segment

Products from companies in our Consumer segment touch the lives of more than a billion people around the world each year. They range from leading brand names that consumers have known and trusted for decades to innovative new skin care and nutritional products.

They include landmark brands, products, and information targeting baby care, skin and hair care, oral care, nutritionals, pain relief, topical care, and much more. These products help us achieve our vision of BRINGING SCIENCE TO THE ART OF HEALTHY LIVING™.

System of management alignment

Overseeing each business segment is a Group Operating Committee, which

  • Provides global strategic leadership for all the franchises within the segment
  • Makes strategic investment decisions among and within franchises in the segment
  • Selects lead geographic markets
  • Ensures strategic alignment between product portfolios

The next level of leadership is the global management of each franchise within a segment. The franchise management team

  • Has responsibility for the selection and positioning strategy of product categories within the franchise
  • Deals with critical issues affecting product technology
  • Identifies success models that can be shared across the organization
  • Tracks the vitality of the franchise over time

Product franchises are grouped within one of our principal global businesses. Many of our businesses develop, produce, and market the products that consumers and health care professionals have come to know and trust. Other businesses provide specialized services that are shared by other Johnson & Johnson companies.

Finally, at the foundation of each business segment are autonomous operating companies where people are closest to the customer and to the business. Each operating company is responsible for helping to grow profitable brands. Leaders within these companies are responsible for developing and implementing business plans, budgets, forecasts, resource allocation, product launches, and performance tracking.
